renewals were received and forwarded. Please continue your
support.
CENTRAL MEETING MINUTES 9/13/99 by Rich Boyd, KE3Q, Sec
K4VV, K3ZO, K4YT, W0CN, KE3Q, N3RR, WR3L, and W3DQ were present at
the central meeting at the Patrick Henry Library, Vienna, VA on
Monday, September 13th. Most were also present at the Outback
Steakhouse beforehand. We had an interesting discussion of PVRC
affairs, the merits of having officers, in coming years, from
different regions rather than just the traditional PVRC area to
have increased involvement and participation on club decision
making from all the regions. W0CN told us of several weeks spent
in Slovenia recently, and K4YT talked about some of his travels --
he's now back home in northern Virginia.
FARfest (Bowie) MEETING MINUTES ON 9/26/99 by Rich Boyd, KE3Q, Sec
Present at the Bowie Hamfest "general" meeting were: N3AM, K3SA,
KE3Q, W3IO, NA1DX, K3GEG, K3MLA, K3HH, K2YWE, K3DSP, N3YUG, AA3LE,
AA3KY, K4YT, W3CQH, W3OU, W3PP, W3OR, N3HUV, W3LEO, W3UJ, K3TM,

W2YE, KB3AUG, WI2T, N3WZV, K1DQV, WR3L, K3UT, W4BA, KI4HK, K3ACG,
KC3VO, K3LP, AND K3UG.
We met under the Budweiser tent out near the left field foul pole
at the Baysox stadium, which was a nice shady spot. The only
problem was the loud PA announcements going on. Next year we may
meet in the restaurant, which is where the ham exams were given,
and apparently would have been a nice, quiet, spot. Or...we could
work things out so that the PA announcements have a moratorium long
enough for our meeting.
We ran around introducing ourselves by callsign -- pretty hard to
hear. And we voted in K3DSP and N3YUG, two more recruits from
southern Maryland brought in by N1WR and WR3Z. Keep 'em comin'!
The majority was satisfied to keep things simple, and we adjourned
without much ado.
NOTES FROM SWVA PICNIC by John Mitchell, K4IQ
On August 28, the SWVA PVRC Chapter convened at the annual Chapter
Picnic at K4IQ's QTH. Guests attending included PVRC Central
member W3YOZ, Marty, as well as guests K3RUQ, Tinsley, and his XYL,
Cheryl, who traveled from the Eastern Shore of Maryland to be with
us. Chapter members present were K1GG, Gordon, along with his XYL
Debbie, N4SBK and daughter Missy, K4KAT; N4GU, Mike; N4EL, Nat;
WA4BKW, Bill and his XYL, K4EP, Phil; and K4IQ, John, and his
family. This was the second meeting for Randy, KC9LC, who attended
with his family, and for John W4JAM, and Susanne, W0MAN. All three
were voted into Chapter membership, and will submit applications
through the Central Chapter.
It was a pleasant, if warm, afternoon, and the "guys" all trooped
to the ridge top to view the 100 ft tower several of them had
helped put up last fall, and scouted out a location for a second
tower on a neighboring knoll. K3RUQ examined the tower
installation and pronounced it satisfactory, which made K4IQ happy.
W3YOZ envisioned a row of phased verticals along the long ridge top
running NE/SW.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, K1GG's wife Debbie had come through
with a giant platter of shrimp cocktail, which the guys took bets
on lasting until we got back from the hike. The food was all still
there, of course, along with plenty more, and the feast commenced
just before sunset.
Afterwards, the group sat about the front porch and enjoyed lively
conversations until well into the night. N4GU, Mike talked of his
new Force 12 C4S going up, and talked with W3YOZ about his new
(commercial) antenna patent which is being manufactured. Nat eyed
the K4IQ house-bracketed tower with 3el 20M and rotatable Force 12
40M as he plans a house-bracketed tower this Fall. Everyone
enjoyed John and Suzanne's tales of their life in the Florida
contesting circles.
The formal meeting concluded with the decision to hold the first
regular season meeting around the end of September, place and time
to be announced. Everyone seemed to enjoy the occasion and take
something with them to whet the appetite for the new contest season
almost upon us.
PVRC SOUTHERN MD REGION by Barry Shapiro, WR3Z
The regional meeting took place Monday September 1999 at the QTH of
Wayne, N1WR. Attendees included members N1WR (Wayne), WR3Z
(Barry), and N3AFT (Mike), as well as guests N3YZU (Dave), K3DSP
(Tom), and N3YUG (Jason).
After brief introductions and summary of summer activities, time
was spent introducing the guests to PVRC and discussing the
different aspects of ham radio that club members are exposed to
(contesting, DX, VHF, antennas, propagation etc). Also discussed
was the history of PVRC, where we're at now with the various
regions and diversification amongst its members.
Discussion then centered on contesting and how various contests can
help sharpen ones operating skills in both CW and SSB (such as
Sweepstakes). Dave, Tom and Jason were participants in this year's
Field Day. Since upgrading to Advanced class recently, K3DSP has
been more active on the HF bands and is now pursuing DX on a
regular basis, while sharpening his CW skills.
WR3Z will be operating CQWW Phone at W3GNQ's and CW at WR3L's
homes. N1WR will be operating either single op or multi-single in
both this fall.
The meeting ended with the group viewing the ZL9CI video from the
Dxpedition earlier this year. The next meeting will take place in
December (or sooner if requested).
REPORT FROM CENTRAL VIRGINIA
(Bob Morris, W4MYA, sent info for the reference page and the
following excerpts from the Prez column by John Youell, WA4QDM,
which will be in the October 1999 issue of the CVCC Newsletter,
"599VA". -editor)
Notes from the September 14, 1999 meeting.
Certificates were everywhere! Ronnie (WU4G) distributed the
certificates from Manassas for the Va QSO Party for the operators
at W4MYA's and W4ML's M/M efforts.
Certificates for WU4G #1 USA in IARU for 1998 to W4MYA, W4HJ & WA4QDM.
W4MYA distributed certificates for the 1996 "2 man" M/M CQWW DX CW
USA WINNERS (W4MYA and WA4QDM ) and the 1998 ARRL SS CW 4th CALL
AREA M/S WINNERS (and 8th in the USA) (W4MYA and WA4QDM).
In attendance were W4DR, AC4OB, W4MYA, KF4QQY, KB4DI, W4HJ, W4HZ,
WU4G, KD4DRZ, N4EKD, K4BAM, W4ML, and WA4QDM.
For the program, Bob (W4MYA) did a slide show of his station,
featuring the new shack (with indoor plumbing!) and the aluminum
forest of Goochland. (Also a shot or two of the MYAn ruins - aka
the boneyard). Good job, Bob!
Also, Jim Green (W4ML) (entertainment committee) offered to reserve
the "Bull and Bear" tentatively the 14th of December for the Xmas
dinner. This is at the James River Center on the 21st floor near
9th street and there is free parking. Jim read some of the menu
items and it sounds great. Jim estimates dinner and a drink will
run about $30 a head. A show of hands from those present
indicated this may be the place. How about some response from the
rest of the membership about this venue?
Bill Whittle (K4BAM) visited an antique radio museum over the
summer and brought us some pictures and literature. He also told
us about the history of "pulling the switch".
W4HZ, Jon had occasion over the summer to stop by W1AW and was
impressed by the friendly nature of the staff and the elegance of
the operating positions. The visit is highly recommended if you
ever have occasion to be in Newington.
Dennis Pinner (N4DEN) has lined up the Vepco RF man for the October
program and tentatively W4DR will line up 3DA0CA for the second
FRIDAY in November. With the Xmas dinner in December, it looks
like the programs for the rest of the year are booked! See y'all
Oct 12th.
SHORT NOTES by the editor, K3DI
John Sherrick, W3HVQ, submitted his unique antenna design to the
ARRL and it was published in Volume 6 of "The ARRL Antenna
Compendium." ($20) Here is a truly amazing piece of mechnical and
electrical work; John's multi-band antenna features three-element
Yagis on 40 and 30 meters, together with a log-periodic design from
20 through 10 meter coverage and it even folds down for protection
against nasty weather. His design was featured on the lower right
of the cover page.
Stations who submitted electronic entries for the 1998 ARRL
10-Meter Contest can receive a detailed report of the results of
the log checking process of their log. Just send a request via
e-mail to Dave at [email protected]. In the subject line of your
email please give your call sign, and the words "10 Meter Log
report." We will email you back a copy of your report. Once you
have a chance to review the results, we welcome feedback and
comments to help us improve the process for 1999. (Excerpt from an
article by K8CC and K9TM via ARRL web site)
N3RR made 4th place in the 3rd call area, single op assisted, all
band CQWWCW in spite of the fact that I went into the hospital at
8:00 AM on Sunday, the last day of the contest! He was in the
hospital for 2.5 days, received a blood transfusion of 4 units and
is fully recovered. The cause of the blood loss is uncertain.
Everybody is requested to give me feedback to keep the reference
page infomation exactly correct and up to date. A thank you goes
to Joe Shuey, NE3H, for letting me know that his node has been on
for many years but not listed. I should have caught this omission
because I have used his fine node (located in Camp Hill) several
time when visiting Harrisburg, PA. Another oversight I am guilty
of is not catching something reported in regional minutes that
should result in a change on the reference page. Please message me
for even smallest errors found on the reference page. Thank you!
Please notice that the September VHF QSO Party has been added to
the 5M competition. There are now 14 club competition contests in
which you can earn points for the PVRC 5Mil award. The total
scores for each member are listed on the page.
The club contest scorekeeper, W2GG, lost his FT-736 and FT-990 in a
severe lightning storm recently. Bob is no longer able to receive
packet messages. Please forward all scores by email
([email protected]) or U.S. mail. Bob hopes to have things back
working again by Sweepstakes. You can also send scores to K3DI via
packet to be forwarded to Bob via email.
Members may request an ASCII text version of the PVRC NEWSLETTER
from [email protected]. You will continue to receive the paper
version with advertisements.
FIVE MILLION AWARD
PVRC awards plaques to members who have achieved 5 million points
based on a calculation described in the rules found at www.pvrc.org.
Also, you may send an SASE to K3DI (QTH on reference page) for a copy.
Basically, get as many points as you can in any club competition
contest listed on the reference page and send your score to W2GG
and either ARRL or CQ. Below are calls and total points awarded
since 1997 as of 9/9/99.
