The Next General Meeting is February 10 (always second Monday):
It will be at The Church of the Nativity (Episcopal), Route 5, Temple
Hills, MD at 7:30 PM. Arrive between 5:00 and 6:30 PM and enjoy an
Italian dinner buffet (about $10) at nearby Topolino's on Old Branch Ave
about 1/4 mile south of Allentown Rd. Directions to the meeting: Take the
Capital Beltway to Exit 7-A. Head south on Maryland Route 5 (Branch Ave)
toward Waldorf. Immediately after entering Branch Ave you will come to a
stoplight, which is Manchester Dr. Turn right on Manchester Dr. In the
middle of the block on the left hand side, you will notice the Church of
the Nativity sign next to the church entrance. Go up the drive to the top
and park in the church's parking lot.

MINUTES OF THE PVRC REGULAR MEETING 2/10/97 TEMPLE HILLS by Brian

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by Rich, KE3Q. Members and guests
were introduced. Members attending were: WR3Z, W3DAD, N5OKR, W3AZ, K3ZB,
WA3TAI, WK3I, K3ZO, W3ZZ, W3LPL, W3YOZ, K4VV, N3RR, N3GM, W3YD, WR3L,
ND3F, K3MM, N3KTV, KE3Q, N3OC, N3HF, K3HH, W2EOS.
Rich had asked for show and tell items for the evening, and brought an
12-position antenna switch from the old W3GRF station. Kevin, W3DAD
brought in a 6-memory super CMOS keyer that he had built. And Dave, WR3L
brought in some samples of matching transformers (50-75 ohm) for VHF use
that were made out of CCTV hardline scraps.
Bill, N3RR, gave a presentation on RFI and some of the solutions he has
successfully implemented at his and his neighbors homes.
The club received a thank-you card from Thom Gooding's family, W8HBN
(ex-K4LHB) for the flowers that were sent.
Jim, N3KTV, gave a treasurer's report. Jim reports the voluntary
donations are going well and we are meeting our expenses with some extra
to spare. MRC will no longer be sponsoring half of the newsletter mailing
costs, and he will see if HRO will pick up all the costs. The club is
very appreciative of the support that MRC has been able to give us.
Membership applications were received from Steve Steltzer WF3T, George
Kabroth W3PLI, and Donald Schwartz K3IT. Discussion was held and all
three were voted in unanimously.
Another discussion was held on the official center of the club and who can
send in scores. The official center of the club is 4 miles East of
Louisa, Virginia. That allows the most participation from North Carolina
and Virginia and parts of West Virginia and Delmarva and at the same time
infringes on FRC territory the least.
Rich discussed the regions and how they are doing, and about the
ever-increasing level of activity from the NC region. They have requested
to revise the logo, and a discussion was held on how to best include the
additional areas without complicating the logo to where it looks bad.
More to come on this, and we will probably arrange for several sample
designs to be put in the newsletter for comments.
W3LPL will host a summer joint FRC/PVRC meeting on Saturday afternoon of
June 21st. Frank has slipped this one week to acomodate the VHF contest
and Frederick, MD hamfests held Father's Day weekend, June 14th.
K3MM gave a presentation on computer RFI. The meeting was adjourned at
9:30.

Site. The meeting was held at O'Malleys tavern with live music and good
food and refreshments.

Program. Club business and announcements. New old business. Plans to
pursue separate ARRL affiliation have been tabled. Decided on a special
meeting prior to upcoming major contests. Howie sadly reports that NO0T
Paul got a job transfer and will be moving with his wife and daughters
Laura AD4PU and Erin KE4RHU to Texas. Contesting. K4MA has been busy
again, this month organizing a PVRC CW Sprint team. Tentative team at the
time of the meeting: AA4NC, K4AAA, K5ZD, K7SV, KE3Q, N4AF, N4ZR, and
W3???. Unfortunately N4CW had travel plans and could not join the team.
(note: wish we'd thought to recap NAQP results for the minutes!)
AA4NC to do CW DX contest M/S and Will is LOOKING FOR OPERATORS. K2AV
will use the KS4XG station for a few hours of the CW ARRL DX. KS4XG will
be SOP for SSB ARRL DX from AA4NC.
Station Projects. K3KO got 70ft of hardline for a new "very fat wire"
antenna and provided many tips about Gem Quads. N4CW reports bogus gain
figures from EZNEC (details in next minutes). K4MA got hardware in hand
to start erecting a 100 foot tower,working on strategy for getting the
concrete to the foundation as the trucks can't get close enough. WB8BMV
described the damage hurricane Fran did to his antennas and asked for
advice about a new antenna farm at his house in Cary. KS4XG asked N3QYE
(finishing masters in forestry) about advice for mounting antennas on
large trees. Key is use lag bolts or the like to arrange for antenna
mounting to "stand off" from bark. K2AV warned that direct contact between
a mounting plate and the outer layer of the tree (ilium) will cause a weak
spot to develop.
Special News. KS4XG reports his 75 year young mother got her novice
license as KF4OSV and is keeping regular CW schedules. She says she might
not ever plug in the microphone!
Next Meetings. The next PVRC/NC meeting will be 6pm at O'Malleys on Tue.
February 11th. O'Malleys is in Oak Park Shopping Center across from
Darryls, up Glenwood from Crabtree Valley, going away from downtown
Raleigh.
NORTHWEST REGIONAL MEETING MINUTES - 8 Feb 97 Frederick MD by Tyler

In attendance were members K3MM, N8II, N3NT, K3TZV, WA3IKK, W3GHR, K3IXD,
W8ZA, N3HBX, N3RR, W9LT, K3LP, N3UN, N3II, and guests Jim Kulp, K3SW, and
Bill Long, NY3M.
Introductions were made around the table: Jeff, N8II operated ARRL CW
single band 20 and made an impressive 1675/110 score! Dave, N3II, op'ed
LP all bands and is collecting scores. Wayne, N3UN, op'ed the RTTY WPX
contest for 10 hours and was 1 of 20 lucky ones to work ZY0SG (for his
#318 RTTY!) on RTTY before they had equipment problems. Guest Bill, NY3M,
op'ed MSLP in ARRL. He has a TH6 @ 100' and an Inv. V for 80. David,
K3LP did part time "work" in the "ARRL Valentine's Contest". Craig, N3NT,
put in another big effort from his "no-antenna" QTH. Steve, K3TZV dabbled
in the contest. Dusty, WA3IKK has a new rotator in, so he's ready for the
next contest. Vaughn, W3GHR put in a few hours... Ed, K3IXD is getting
ready to place the next order for shirts and hats. Bob, W8ZA was visited
by WD3A for ARRL CW. They got Bob's computers interfaced and proceeded to
work lots of spots in the contest. John, N3HBX is still fighting power
line noise from some stubborn 69kv problems and will operate the 160 SSB
test. Bill, N3RR had his lowest score ever in ARRL CW citing personal
problems...but no RFI! Lamar, W9LT reports just over 1 million SOHP in
ARRL CW and a good score in the 160 CW as well. Guest Jim, K3SW is still
"learning code". Tyler, K3MM op'ed 40 meters for a change at W3LPL in
ARRL CW, where victory is claimed by a narrow margin over N2RM. He also
reported excellent conditions and activity for the RTTY WPX contest,
setting a new world SOHP record by a wide margin.
This was the first meeting for both guests, K3SW and NY3M.
Ed, K3IXD reminded us that time is short to place orders for PVRC shirts
and hats. The order will go in (has gone) the first week in March.
K3MM made a brief synopsis of the regular meeting.
Bill, N3RR stuck around after the meeting and filled us in on his recent
telephone interference investigations with his neighbors and his
installation of K-COM hard-wired filters in his house wiring as well as
other
interference-solving techniques that are available. He also reminded us
of the FCC documents that are available free of charge regarding RF
interference. Their number is 1-800-418-3676 and the document numbers are
CIB2 and CIB10.
The next NW meeting will be on the usual third Tuesday, March 18th at
Legend's Restaurant in Frederick, MD.

Program. Club business and announcements. It was decided to have an
alternative "Southern" meeting location from time to time. Also, once the
weather warms up we'll have some meetings at member's homes. We agreed to
make an effort to circulate contest results at the meetings.

AA4NC and K4MA have only Barbados Customs to worry about prior to the ARRL
DX SSB test as they appear to have all details covered. N4CW will join
the AA4NC M/S effort for ARRL DX CW but can't come until Saturday due to
Valentine's Day commitments. The reminder of Valentine's day being this
Friday caused a general panic in the meeting with sudden plans for
Valentine's Lunches!
Station Projects. K4HA has received domestic clearance for a second
tower. N4CW reports EZNEC and AO at odds over gain figures for the two
element Moxon wire beam design. KS4XG to research this.
Other Discussion. K4MA suffered greatly with TR lockups due to RFI while
CT worked fine in the same setting during Sprint at the K4HA station.
AA4NC had numerous NA lockups during Sprint not related to RFI. AA4NC
reports CT is once again a supported software product.
Next Meetings. The next PVRC/NC meeting will be 6pm at Houlihans
Restaurant on Wednesday March 5th. (Houlihans is at Cary Crossroads
shopping area off US1 at Walnut Street, in view of Home Depot)
OVER THE HILL MEETING 2/21/97 by Bill Leavitt, W3AZ
The Over The Hill gang met at the Oxon Hill Ramada on February 12, 1997.
Those attending were W3CP (W3CPB), AA4XU, W6AXX, W3ABC, W3GN, W3EIV
(KC3AG) AND W3AZ. Good food and a good time were had by all.
GREG ALTIG RETIRES 17 MARCH 97 by Robert Lutz, WB2BZR
Greg Altig (N5OKR) is retiring from the US Navy and relocating to
California. There will be a going away party for him on Monday, March 17,
1997 at the "NEST", Route 97 and 108 in Olney starting at 1800 or 6 PM for
all you civilians. The menu is Grilled New York Strip State (10 oz),
Sauteed Chicken Marseille, Fried Seafood Combination (Shrimp, Haddock,
Oysters, Crabcake), Baked Stuffed Flounder, or Prime Rib. All served with
tossed salad, baked potato, coffee or tea, and chocolate sundae, apple
pie, or sherbet. Cash bar. $21.00. RSVP by Wednesday, March 12, 1997 to
the "Beezer" (WB2BZR) on packet with choice of dinner.
QUIZ: PVRC DX CALLS by Jack Colson, W3TMZ [email protected]
Over the years many PVRC'ers have operated from any number of DX QTH's
using an assortment of calls. The quiz is to associate the DX call with
an operator's name (the name of the operator does not change wheras his
call might, i.e. vanity call lotteries, etc.) Note an operator may have
operated using more than one call.
Submit your answers by listing the correct operator adjacent to calls
shown above. Send your score sheet to W3TMZ via packet or whatever means
and the results will be published in a future newsletter. I found these
by going through QSL cards. Have fun!

I joined PVRC in mid-1981 when I moved from Florida to Herndon, VA, and
operated from W3QHF and K4CG multi-op in several contests. That's how I
met Larry, K7SV who was the chief operator at K4CG at the time. He
invited us PVRC members without stations to operate from K4CG. I moved up
here to the "North Country" in mid-1982, but have tried to keep up with
the PVRC since then, and I try to get on in the Reunions when I can. (Ted
dutifully sends in a yearly donation and receives the PVRC Newsletter.

The NNYCC exists partly due to my membership in the PVRC and to WN2R's
stint as HL9AA, and to the ARRL's forming the NNY section last year. I
tried to get Fred to join PVRC while he was at Ft. Meade a couple years
ago, but the closest he ever got was stumbling across W3LPL's antenna farm
once, he said.
By the way, we just got our vanity club call, W2NNY. You'll be hearing it
in the contests.
(Ted, I would like to add that I attended Clarkson in Malone and Potsdam.
One day on the Malone campus I saw the thermometer off scale below -25F.

NOTES FROM YOUR EDITOR.
Dave Blanchard, N3II is doing a great job of tabulating the scores of PVRC
members for most contests. If you have a score for a lessor contest, you
should check with Dave and he should be able to let you know who to send
the score to if it is not one he handles. You can communicate with Dave
via the convential methods, the DXcluster, or email to
[email protected]. Of course, you must also send your score in
separately to the contest sponsor such as the CQ Magazine or the ARRL to
get credit and for PVRC to get credit.
The PVRC Newsletter has been limited to a simple format in Word Perfect
5.1 that will readily convert to MS WORD 6. Each month, I modem the
edited file to Jim N3KTV who converts it, has it reproduced, and then does
the distribution. Jim, the good news is that the day before the ARRL
'phone, I received a suite of MS software that includes Word 6 for Windows
3.1. The bad news is that I have yet to start the learning curve. Others
should note that you can send me stuff in nearly any format and we'll get
it into the PVRC Newsletter. An ASCII file is certainly the safest to
send; that is why there is an ASCII standard. As yet, I would rather
receive an Internet message with material as text rather than an
attachment.
