PVRC NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 2002
PVRC PRESIDENT'S REPORT FOR JAN 2002 by Brian McGinness, N3OC
Happy New Year to my great friends at PVRC! We have had another successful
year, not meeting all challenges, but having a good time along the way. My
heartfelt thanks to all the officers, trustees, regional coordinators and
others who have put in so much extra to help make PVRC a success.
This year we have added two trustees to the eight we already had. Both of
these members have offered valuable input and assistance over the last couple
of years, so it made perfect sense to make them trustees. Please welcome
Dallas W3PP and Rob ND3A as trustees for 2002. The current list of trustees
are the club officers, plus N3RR, KE3Q, K3MM, N4ZR, N4AF, W4MYA, W4ZYT, K4IQ, W3PP, and
ND3A.
I have used the trustees over the last couple of years to help make policy
decisions. Rather than using my opinion to settle things (which isn't always
right!), we have used the trustees, via email, to formulate our official
position about things. So if you have any input you want the club as a whole
to consider, feel free to discuss it with any of the trustees and they in turn
can bring the matter to what is our equivalent of the board of directors.
As of this writing, it appears that SMC has again taken the Sweepstakes gavel.
We beat last year's winning score, but as one might expect, the bar was raised
higher than last year's score. We were better organized, and my thanks to
K3MM, N4ZR and W2GG for coordinating this year's effort. But the bottom line
still remains NUMBER of logs submitted. I think we have more members living
in-circle than they do (we have 420). That means we could have up to 840 logs
submitted for SS, and they had around 350 I think. So the bottom line remains
if we could get 50% of the membership on for both modes, 100% on for one mode,
or some combination of the two, we could win it. Several years ago, Rich met
with members to the Laurel Amateur Radio Club (LARC) to discuss contesting.
Many of us (myself included) have LARC to thank for their FCC license upgrades.
Pud, W3YD has announced that they are becoming active as a PVRC region, and I
have appointed Pud as their regional coordinator. They already have had
several PVRCers, and they will be adding more and conducting regional PVRC
meetings in Laurel. Please welcome Pud and his conspirators to our efforts!
Also, per the by-laws, this will be my last year as president of PVRC. Three
consecutive years is quite enough. So we have a year to recruit a new
president. The responsibility for nominating club officers lies with the
trustees, so we will be discussing that over the upcoming year. The same
applies to the VP position, so there WILL be vacancies at the end of this
year! So anyone interested in being a club officer, you have some time to
think about it, then it would be appropriate to let one of the trustees know of
your interest. GO PVRC!
SEARCHING FOR NEW MEMBERS by Bob Dannals, Secretary, W2GG
Over the past few years, with the encouragement and assistance of KE3Q, I've
collected Sweepstakes logs (AFTER PEOPLE SUBMIT THEM DIRECTLY TO THE ARRL) and an
occasional 160 or VHF log and attempted to sort through the various log
formats to pull out calls of people within the PVRC competitive radius (MD, VA,
WV, NC, EPA, DE, WPA) who are not already PVRC members. With those calls in
hand, I run a distance check from Club center calculation to see if any fall
within our Club territory. For those calls that do fall within the competitive
radius and are not members, by looking at the QSO times and serial numbers
received, I also try to see how active that station may have been.
Now that everyone is using the Cabrillo format for electronic submissions (!),
the task should (could) be simpler.
So if you are willing to contribute to the effort, after you submit your log to
the ARRL, I would be happy to collect those Cabrillo files and see what we can
find. No log is too big, no log is too small.
With possible changes in the club competition rules coming in the future, like
redefining the competitive circle and submitting scores for a regional as well
as local club, it is important to find possible new members wherever we can.
PVRC REFLECTOR PROBLEM
Howie Hoyt, N4AF, reports that the reflector is deluged by bounced messages.
The three commandments (#2 is a killer) are:
1) Thou shalt not post from unsubscribed ID (work id ?)
2) Thou shalt not post with HTML turned on in your email program
3) Thou shalt not post using email ATTACH- use copy paste.
WORLD CONTEST STATION DATABASE AND OTHER WEB SITE DOINGS
During December, several new features were added to the PVRC web site,
www.pvrc.org. Most important of these is a new and revised World Contest
Station Database, formerly on Pete Smith's (N4ZR) personal site. This is the
second major revision of the database, which was begun by K7ZO in the 1995-97
time Frame and now contains descriptions of over 1850 HF contest stations
worldwide. You can view its contents by call-sign, for any station that is
listed. You can report changes in your own listing at any time. Recent
improvements include combining the US/VE and Other databases so that you need
only enter the callsign of any station, wherever in the world it is located.
N4ZR, who now maintains the database, is adding a series of specialized
"look-ups" as he learns more about the SQL database language. Through the link
at the bottom of the first database page you can find out who is in the
database by prefix, and look up who uses what transceiver. More to come!
Come check it out, and add or update your own record -- help make this an
essential reference for contesters.
Also new to the web page in December are photos from the Holiday Party, the
first set of PVRC 5M award numbers for the current contest season, a revised
page of information for prospective members (including limited access to the
membership database), and an on-line application form for people interested in
joining us. The form is already proving useful, with 5 prospective new members
from that source in less than a month.

NORTHWEST MEETING NOTES 11/20/01 by Ed Steeble, K3IXD, chairman
(This was received in Nov. -editor.)
The meeting was at Paradise Grill in Frederick, MD. In attendance were: K3IXD,
W3EKT, K3DNE, N3HBX, K3TZV, K3WC, NE3H, WD3A, K3SX, W4XP, N3YDT, K3ZO, W3ZZ, N3VOP, W8ZA,
K2UOP, K8OQL, N4MM, W3KHZ, K2PLF, K3UG, N3FX, W6NRJ, K3SKE, K3MM, K3LP, and K3TM.
A record setting 27 members turned out to talk about the once in a lifetime VHF
conditions and SS during dinner.
The business part of the meeting:
1) the attendees voted to have a December NW meeting,
2) don't forget to sign up for the annual
PVRC holiday party, and
3) a reminder to read N4ZR's email about
applying for the SS club award(s) you earned. See his email or follow the
links on the PVRC web site.
4) From ARRL via N4MM: The CAC will conduct a meeting via a conference call in
January. Club competition is the scheduled topic.
5) From CQ via W3ZZ: CQ is only accepting logs via email, no USPS mail. Unlike
ARRL, which only accepts logs in cabrillo, CQ will accept any format. This has
the committee trying to convert many logs into a single format.
Around the table:
K3IXD - Ed operated at W8ZA for the CQWW SSB. Prior to SS he got his packet
antenna back up. He was on from home in SS Ph.
W3EKT - Ed operated CQWW Ph, making all his QSOs via S&P. He completed his 6m
WAS and is waiting for the cards. He worked about 30 new 6m countries since
mid-October.
K3DNE - Ed was at W8ZA for CQWW SSB. He reports the 6m DX is the best he has
seen in his 30 years. Over the weekend he heard EU, AF, CA, SA, US, and PAC all
at the same time.
N3HBX - John was SO on 15m in CQWW SSB. KD4D guest operated SS CW and Ph from
John's QTH.
K3WC - Dusty missed the 6m DX since Sid still has his 6m rig. (K3IXD's note:
You had to be there for the full story.)
NE3H - Joe operated both CQWW SSB and SS. K3TZV - Steve is working 10m and
will be on for the 10m contest.
WD3A - Tom was at W8ZA for CQWW SSB. He helped repair W8ZA 40m beam and reset it for CW.
He operated SS CW and PH from home. He borrowed an amp from W8ZA for SS Ph.
K3SX - Sid completed his 6m WAS and reported working some of his EU 160m
friends on 6m. He operated CQWW SSB from home.
W4XP - Chuck was able to get on for a few hours in both the CQWW SSB and SS SSB contests.
K3YDT - Jim completed 6m WAC.
K3TM - Roger was on for SS SSB.
K3ZO - Fred is still in the top 10 for CQWW SSB. He operated both SS CW and PH
but left the Ph contest to work the VHF DX Sunday. He's been in this area since
1982 and reports Sunday was the best VHF conditions he has witnessed here.
W3ZZ - Gene has bought a voice keyer for SS Ph but wasn't on since his major
antenna maintenance, which began on Friday, wasn't completed until Monday. He
had worked 15 new countries on 6m in the past three weeks. He was W3GNQ for
CQWW SSB.
N3VOP - Mike did set up a station at the Carroll County RC hamfest and had 16
guest operators on during CQWW SSB. He reports this is a good way to interest
hams in contesting. He had to work this past weekend so he missed the VHF
openings.
W8ZA - He had a multi operator station on for CQWW SSB. He and K8QOL operated
SS CW. He did a hours of operation in SS SSB. He has received a 1st place
certificate for 1999 CQWW SSB, and a 1st place Certificate for 2001 ARRL
Multi-two ARRL DX Ph.
K2UOP - Tom operated all S&P in CQWW SSB. He received 1st place in 8th call
area for 1999 CQWW SSB. He operated both SS CW and Ph.
K8OQL - Jerry operated at W8ZA for CQWW SSB and SS CW. He was on from home for SS SSB.
N4MM - John operated CQWW SSB, SS CW and SS PH from home. He has worked 17 new ones on 6m.
W3KHZ - Art missed the contest do to his father's illness.
K2PLF - Marty did his first guest operating at N4RV in CQWW SSB. He is
intrigued by packet, computer, radio interfacing. Look for him to automate his
home station soon. Marty provides a 6m packet link between MD/DC/VA and the NE.
He reported the link went down during SS SSB. He attributes this to a 40m
dipole erected for SS that has an end very near the 6m packet beam. He expects
the link to be solid for CQWW CW.
K3UG - Barry has been inactive in the contests.
N3FX - Tony was in a PSK31
contest and both SS CW and SSB.
W6NRJ - Jim continues to experiment with wire antennas. He is now phasing two
1/2 squared loop antennas.
K3SKE - Dan was in SS and is learning how the software works.
K3MM - Ty operated SS CW and SSB as SO2R. He was at W3LPL for CQWW SSB. For CQ RTTY he
used AI6V P40V QTH. His goal was to break the world low power record. By the end of
24 hours he had done that. By the end 40 hours he had broken the world high power record
just using low power. His claimed score is a new world
record.
K3LP - David was at the J69B QTH for CQWW SSB. He used the call J6R. David's
new QTH should be ready early December. All the hard-line and control cables
have been installed. He hopes to be contesting by March or May.
In general Q & A, the following points made and the information was given:
1) To aid in VHF DX chasing use CT in VHF contest mode and the band map feature
will keep track of the stations/frequencies. Thanks W3EKT.
2) In SS there are no limits about how long you need to remain on a band.
3) Be sure to review your cabrillo file before sending it. N3HBX had the wrong
mode in several contests. K3IXD had to edit "B" to "U" in his SS
reports.
4) W2GG keeps reminding us via emails and packet messages to use "Potomac
Valley Radio Club", not anything else. A comment was made that in one contest
both "PVRC" and "Potomac Valley Radio Club" were listed. BTW both
entries
placed high in the results, but ....
5) PVRC needs to spot their members more often and also DX stations, especially
members on DX expeditions. K3LP did a post contest check of spots of his J6R
low power operation. He believes lack of J6R spots hurt his and the local PVRC
individual scores.
6) In SS CW the operators should try slower speed CQs. Not everyone can copy
35 to 40 wpm.
The December 18th meeting will be at the Paradise Grill.
NORTHWEST MEETING NOTES FOR DEC by Ed Steeble, K3IXD, chairman
The NW region met at Paradise Grill in Frederick, MD on 18 December 2001. In
attendance were: K3IXD, N4MM, K8OQL, K2UOP, K4VV, K2PLF, W3KHZ, N3HBX, W3LL, K3SKE, K3LP,
K3MM (+2), W2YE, N3VOP, W6NRJ, AND W8ZA.
The business part of the meeting:
1) We voted in a new member, W3LL, Bud Governale.
2) If you ordered PVRC QSL cards from N3NT, they are now being printed.
3) Per ARRL, and a good idea for CQ contests too, use "Potomac Valley Radio
Club" not PVRC, as the club name.
4) W3EKT's XYL is in the hospital, scheduled for bypass surgery. (It was
successful.)
5) From ARRL via N4MM: An expedition to Ducie is planned for March 2002, ARRL
hasn't received any paper work for the P5 operation, another group should be
headed to P5 soon; there is no CAC report yet, the major topics for CAC are the
dual club contest score submissions and the club boundary issues.
6) K4VV said the PVRC officers are very interested in the club boundary
definition. He reported that the Holiday Dinner had about 70 attendees, WA1S
gave an excellent talk about the K5K DXexpedition.
7) Everyone was reminded to make sure you turn your scores in, on time. Also
send the info to W2GG.
8) K3MM said the club will be adding the WAE contest to the club-competition
contest. (I think this becomes effective in the next club-competition season.)
Around the table:
N4MM, John operated the 10m contest and the ARRL 160m contest. He installed a
snake receiving antenna and worked JT on 80m. He has 22 new countries on 6m.
K8OQL, Jerry operated the CQWW CW from W8ZA's and the ARRL 160m and the 10m contests from
his home. He mentioned he used a Butternut vertical antenna which
others at the table said they, too were very pleased with its performance.
K2UOP, Tom added 12 more radials to his 160m antenna and it paid off in the
ARRL 160m contest. He was on for the 10m and had some good runs. He was
fighting a cold and was very hoarse on Sunday, even after getting some medicine
from the bar Saturday night, so he worked only CW on Sunday. He has been
working some 6m DX too.
K4VV, Jack has purchased a home with some land out in the country and will be
moving there in the spring.
K2PLF, Marty operated CQWW CW at N4RV. He did the CQWW CW and the ARRL 10m contest from
home.
W3KHZ, Art operated the 10m contest.
N3HBX, John worked KH6 on 6m. He operated the ARRL 10m contest.
W3LL, Bud operated the ARRL 10m contest.
K3SKE, Dan finally got the ARRL robot to accept his SS submission.
K3LP, David said in March he will be at J6 as part of a multi effort in WPX.
K3MM, Ty said he got on briefly in the ARRL 160m Contest and the ARRL 10m
contest.
W2YE, Dick was active in the 10m contest. He, too, Has been working 6m DX and
has over 80 new grid squares.
N3VOP, Mike worked GM, G, EI, for 5 new DX grids, on 6m.
W6NRJ, Jim has phased two, 40m bobtails and is making comparison long path
QSOs. He is impressed with the performance.
W8ZA, Bob had several operators over for CQWW CW. For the first time, murphy
showed up: he lost a radio and a computer plus he had bad band conditions and
then a lightening storm forced him to shut down for a while on Sunday. He was
on for ARRL 160m and 10m contests.
K3IXD, Ed reported problems during the 10m contest: CT 9.70 wanted to log all
QSOs in CW so after a few QSOs he switched to a prior version, when he tuned up
the amp the computer would lock up, but with power reduced to 1KW from 1.5KW he
could operate after rebooting, and he lost 4 hours Saturday afternoon because
the washing machine burned up and he had to go buy another.
In general Q and A, the following points made and the following information was
given: Several people mentioned that their rates went up after being spotted.
Everyone is urged to spot all the PVRCers contesting. The local packet spots do
show up worldwide, such as on the OH DX Summit.
The January 15th meeting will be at the Paradise Grill, 1275 W. Patrick Street,
Frederick, MD. It is in Frederick Shoppers World, across the Street from PEP
Boys. (301) 682-6066.
The NW Region meetings are on the third Tuesday of the month. Most arrive about
6PM for dinner and informal discussions, the meeting begins at 7:15 PM.
NC CHAPTER MINUTES, 11/1/01 by Guy Olinger, K2AV
We met at Ryan's in Cary. Attending were K2AV, K4CIA, N4TL, K3KO, N2NFG, N4CW, KQ2P, NI4S,
N4YDU, NX9T, K4HA, K4TMC, WJ9B, K4QPL, K4MA, WW4M, and AA4NC.
Good discussion on SS. Seems to worked out given NC logs reported.
K4CIA said not much going on. K2AV found Bill's two missing carabiners only
after going to REI and getting him new ones. Now ya got FOUR with K4CIA on it.
It was worth every penny though.
N4TL has an A3WS up. Also got 5BDXCC! Congrats.
WW4M reported on status of W4ATC. Going to K3KO to operate phone SS.
K3KO, with AD4L not there to defend himself, reports that the amp jinx
apparently can attach itself to a loaned amp and function outside the general
location of the owner of the jinx. Some reference to an obscure voodoo
principle. Maybe one of these years we will find out that a power tube can be
infected by a virus. Would explain a lot.
N4CW has a problem with HIS amp. (Lives too close to K3KO.) Will be on for
SSCW.
AA4NC reports severe line noise problems (again). Gave a convincing wrapup on
adapting to that circumstance by using packet and serendipity to operate in a
2T zero R mode.
K4MA will be at AA4NC for various contests, and then to K4JA for WWCW.
N2NFG (read past minutes) is at 20' on his tower. Some considerable discussion
as effectiveness of 20' high antennas for SS.
NI4S has a new radio. (Carnac had a brain belch and forgot to write down WHAT
radio). Will report how it does next meeting. Contests will be a good test.
NX9T has all new antennas on his Trylon 72'. Playing good. We'll see how good
in SS.
K4HA took down Will's 4 el twenty. Got a 204BA to replace it. Bob will be doing
a wedding to celebrate SS. The FOOD will definitely be better.
K4TMC missed WWSSB. Is putting up a new C3SS and 80m Inv Vee.
WJ9B reports he will be all by himself for SS. No explanation of what NOT all
by himself meant.
K4QPL brought his newly constructed SO2R box for show and tell, & tell. Also
reports he is trying to get the authors of CT, NA, Writelog, and TR to make it
impossible for anyone to enter the call sign K4PQL, and put out a new release
with this mod before SS. (Should also note that when Carnac first typed this
paragraph, the leading call sign was mistyped "K4PQL". It's hopeless, Jim. You
should upgrade and get the vanity call KQ4P, so we can get started confusing it
with KP4Q.) Carnac will report next time on all the emergency design
improvements to the SO2R box that occurred during November.
Meeting adjourned to miscellaneous scientific discussions and BS sometime.
Carnac forgot his watch.
SW VIRGINIA CHAPTER MEETING by Buddy Smith, W4YE
The SW VA PVRC gathered at the Golden Coral, near the Roanoke airport on
November 30th. Chairman John, K4IQ called the meeting to order with the
following present: John's 2 harmonics, K1GG, N4EL, KA4BSA, W4YE, and N4JED.
David Jones, N4JED was elected to membership. David is an architect by
profession and an active ham who enjoys contests. He serves as Assistant
Director, Roanoke Division ARRL. David has a nice hilltop location and likes
vertical antennas. We look forward to David's membership and contributions.
Discussion was held concerning SS and CQ contests. Over 50% of our members
were active in these events. N4EL, K4IQ, K1GG, WM3T, N2QT and W4YE were a few that
participated. Everyone also noted how many other PVRC'ers seemed to be on
the air - a good sign! Gordon, K1GG had an outstanding SS SSB score of over
200K. It was noted that finding a clear frequency for CQs on 75 during SS was
a challenge.
In a non contesting mode, Emily Davis, KA4BSA told us of her recent airline
experience. As she passed through the airport metal detectors, her tube of
tooth paste set off the alarm, resulting in her having to step aside for
additional searching. K4IQ added that in some European airports any bag left
unattended even briefly is liable to be covered with a small bell like device.
In a few seconds the bag and contents are destroyed by this device!
SWVA members will be active in ARRL 10 and 160 contests with the exception of
K4IQ our top 160 man...who will be out of the country for most of that
contest. K1GG will try to take up the slack.
Next meeting will be the annual Holiday Dinner, in January 2002, time and place
TBA, with YLs and XYLs invited for dinner. Meeting adjourned at 7:45PM.
OVER-THE-HILL LUNCH GROUP by Ben Shaver, AA4XU
The monthly meeting of the PVRC Over-The-Hill Lunch Bunch was held at
MainStreetUSA in Annandale, VA at Noon on Wednesday, November 28, 2001. The
following PVRC members attended: K6ETM, George Sinclair; K3ZO, Fred Laun; W3AZ, Bill
Leavit; W3GN, Lawrence Fadner; and AA4XU, Ben Shaver.
The Group meets for lunch and discussion monthly, rotating place of meeting
around the Beltway. The December meeting is omitted to avoid holiday conflicts.
The January 23, 2002 meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn, Route-1 and the
Beltway, near College Park and Beltsville at 12:00 noon. The February 2002
meeting will be held in Oxon Hill, MD and the March 2002 meeting will be held
in Annandale, VA.
For dates, times and travel directions telephone W3AZ Bill Leavit, 301-292-5797
or E-mail AA4XU Ben Shaver ([email protected]). All PVRC members and
their guests are welcome.
HOLIDAY TRAVEL by Dick Wilder, K3DI
We drove 3526 miles over the holidays to visit children in Alabama for
Christmas and then continue to Key West for New Years Eve. (The trip resulted
in this issue being prepared one week later than usual.)
When Martha drove, I operated the County Hunters Net (CHN) on 14056.5 kHz which
is much like working a contest during weekdays. Many will recall that Andy,
W3XE, was very active on the CHN.
On the evening of 12/29, while stopped in Naples, FL during our trip south, I
worked Howie, N4AF, on 40m CW and he ran Europeans who gave reports of my
little mobile signal.
On the return trip to the North, we stopped in to visit Dick (N4RP/C6AKP, ex-
W4KXV) and Lona Phelps at Delray Beach, FL who provided a delicious dinner and
comfortable over-night accommodations.
Dick has sold the sail boat that they had lived on for several years and bought
a condominium that really does not allow antennas. However, he has a stealth
tri-band vertical and a wire for 40 meters hidden on the flat roof and operates
with 100 Watts.
Lona, originally Danish, became a US citizen and, unfortunately, her first
exposure US voting was in Palm Beach during the butterfly ballot voting mess.
