CENTRAL MEETING MINUTES, 1/01 by Brian McGinness, N3OC
Here are the minutes from the January 2001 Central meeting in Temple
Hills, MD at the Church of the Nativity:
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM after dinner at
Topolino's. The following members were in attendance: N3GB, N3HXQ,
WK3I, K3ZO, W3LPL, KE3Q, WR3L, N3NT and N3OC.
N3OC gave the president's report. We remain optimistic about the SS
and 10m contest results. (late note - does not look so good for SS
now from info on the NCCC web site...)
Jay Terleski, WX0B of Array Solutions will hopefully be coming to one
of our meetings this spring to talk about stacking HF yagis. More on
this as we find out.
Club expenses are up from some unanticipated expenses. The were many
more 5m award plaques given out this year. PVRC also is paying the
bill for the ZF2SA QSL cards, as well as the cost of setting up the
new badges. There is no crisis, but if you haven't sent in a
donation in a while please do so.
The PVRC historical documents were found by Scott Affens and are
waiting for us to pick them up. That was good news.
Our new webmaster is Pete, N4ZR. Pete is in the process of receiving
the web files so he can get it loaded in his system at home. In the
meanwhile, we have located an ISP who will host the site and our
domain for free. For now the site remains as is on it's current
server until we can make the change.
The ARRL CAC has requested input as it reviews the rules for club
competition. The PVRC Trustees have formulated a position and
suggestions for the CAC on several issues, which is in the process of
being written up. Among the issues are the 175-mile club circle.
We are making comments to the CAC on a couple aspects of the way in
which the existing circle is implemented, with the intended result to
get both PVRC and the ARRL off the hook of having to measure a
potential station with hi-tech GPS accuracy. We are hoping the ARRL
is just as anxious as we are to avoid having to do this.
Dave, WR3L gave a brief treasurer's report. He advises that he will
be releasing a full report in February. He is also making
arrangements to get the new badges on line, and the orders will be
placed for the ones who have been waiting. As soon as he is ready to
accept more orders Dave will let us know.
Dave is also making arrangements for us to sponsor the CQWW CW
single-op Caribbean plaque in memory of K3SA. We are also sponsoring
three other plaques.
Craig, N3NT distributed as many QSL cards as he could. (I have AA4KD
and N4RV to bring to the February meeting - N3OC.)
There being no official program for the evening, war stories were
told for the remaining amount of time. George, N3GB made a rare
appear-ance to advise he has not been on the air much. Ed, N3HXQ is
work-ing on his station, and will be going to KL7 (is there now -
N3OC). Rich WK3I worked QRP in the 160 contest. Fred K3ZO recently
came back from the Seanet convention, and worked at HS0AC during the
contest. Frank gave a report on their CQWW CW multi/multi effort.
Rich gave us an update on his new house project and planned on
applying for permits the following day for a half-dozen or so towers!
Craig N3NT has been working lots of hours, and hopes to return to
contesting later this year.
PVRC/NC MEETING MINUTES 1/4/01 by Pete Soper, KS4XG
The meeting was held at Ryans Family Restaurant in Cary from
5:30-7:30pm on January 4th.
Attendees. Guy K2AV, Brian K3KO, Bob K4HA, Brent KO4PY, Pete KS4XG,
Bob N2NFG, Bert N4CW, Nate N4YDU, Gary W2CS. Regrets: K4QPL, WW4M,
K4MA, KI7WX
Membership. This is the first meeting of N4YDU Nate Moreschi. After
finishing his degree at UNCC Nate has settled down in Youngs-ville
where he is a sportswriter for two area newspapers. Nate has gotten
active in contesting again after a few years off and is enthusiastic
about joining PVRC. Nate is sponsored by N4CW. Welcome Nate! (Nate
was the red hot operator during the 1997 Field Day effort that KO4PY
organized on the USS North Carolina in Wilming-ton -KS4XG) Chapter
membership remains at 37.
Announcements. KU4BP Ed Swiderski in Winston Salem would like to
join a PVRC/NC multi-single effort for ARRL DX/phone. Ed has
operated at W4WS. Ed can be reached at [email protected].
N2NFG is still organizing teams for NAQP CW and invites additional
participants to join WJ9B and help create a third team. To join in
send email to [email protected].
News around the table. N4CW took part in the 10 meter contest and
Stew Perry 160. Bert was pleased with his new 160 antenna, an in-
verted V with peak at 90 feet, which enabled a number of Euro-pean
contacts and one with a VK6. He's looking forward to the RTTY
contest and Sprint.
K4HA has been active with tower work, helping with the erection of
the new NX9T Trylon tower (a very smooth operation thanks to a
precision crane operator). He also helped get a quad up to 40' at
the KO4PY lakeside QTH. Bob is plan-ning to do the upcoming 160 con-
test from W2XL in New York and is also preparing to put monobanders
up at his home station.
KO4PY now has a quad up over-looking a lake and is having fun with
QRP contests. Brent invites every-body to take part in the N.C. QSO
Party (1200-2359 UTC Feb 24th and the same Feb 25th).
N2NFG is preparing for the RTTY contest and reports that unexpected
logging of land behind him caused 500 feet to disappear from one
Beverage. There was speculation about the timber being pre-baled as
a result of this. Bob is hoping to buy some of this land and extend
his antenna farm by another acre.
K2AV tried to work on his new Trylon but found that no amount of
clothing enabled work this time of the year when the wind is blowing.
Guy still managed to take part in the 10m contest using his remaining
(post storm) antenna, a Gap Titan.
KS4XG expects to close on a 2.85 acre QTH in one month. The plan is
to work the ARRL DX ssb contest at the old station and then tear down
and move it to the new QTH. Pete hopes to get 80-90' of Rohn 25 up
at the new place initially and use existing antennas while planning a
second, 120-140' tower (and a crop of monobanders) for next year.
The new location is three miles south of K2AV and six miles west of
AA4NC. Pete managed to spend 3.5 hours on tower work New Year's day
but reports that this would have been impossible with even two miles
per hour of wind. Hurry up, Springtime!

K3KO received his 5 Million Award plaque and explained the provisions
for endorsements on the plaque. Brian worked the 10m contest low
power but has his Acom linear back from repair (shorted tube). He
has a set of new spare tubes in hand now (only $200 for a pair!).
The three over three 10m stack is working with correct phase now that
the gamma matches are both on the same sides but Brian reports
performance is not materially better than his quad on this band. It
does give him the ability to cover three directions very quickly
however. Brian also put up a seventh and last Beverage to the SW.
After KS4XG sent the location of his new QTH Brian used some mapping
software to create some of the raw data required by the YTAD terrain
analy-sis software by Dean Straw. This combined statistical signal
arrival angle data with calculation of re-flected (and refracted)
signals with a specified antenna arrangement to show how well a given
antenna system (or up to 3 systems) provide coverage of a given
frequency.
W2CS has been preparing packet systems for future use at the N4AF
station. Gary and K2AV are expect-ing to join Howie for a Multi/2
ARRL DX/CW effort. There was a discus-sion of strategies using cross
polar-ization to allow multiplier searching on the same band being
used for running. The consensus was that careful attention to
maintaining true cross polarization was important but separation of
the receive and trans-mit antennas is probably necessary also to
get enough attenuation when high power is being used.
N4YDU described his current setup in Youngsville, which is an acre
lot with plenty of trees. He's running two delta loops at right
angles to each other on 10-20 meters using balanced feeders and also
has a 40 meter ground plane, an 80 meter vertical and 160 meter
inverted L. Nate scored 130k points in CW Sweeps with this setup and
said he runs low power for most contests.
Next Meeting. The next meeting will be Thursday, February 1st at
Ryans (pleasant patter at 5:30, formal meeting at 6pm).
PVRC NW REGION MINUTES, 1/16 by Ed Steeble, K3IXD, Chairman
The NW region met at Tully's Grill in Frederick on 21 November 2000,
the third Tuesday of the Month. The first attendees arrived about
5:30, with most coming between 6:00 and 6:30, all for an informal
dinner and good discussions. The meeting began at 7:30.
In attendance were: K3IXD, W3EKT, N3II, N3UN, W3ZZ, N3ND, N3YDT,
K8OQL, W8ZA, N4MM, K3WC, K3LP, K3SX, K3UG, NE3H, K3MM + daughter, and
N3KTV.
Around the table. K3IXD, Ed, noted that he had K3WC's call wrong as
W3' during the last minutes. Ed is getting ready for the VHF
contest.
W3EKT, Ed, got his HF beam up on a "rocket launcher, for the CQ WW CW
contest. On another "rocket launcher" he has the 6m, 2, 222, and 432
mHz antennas ready for the VHF contest. Ed informed the attendees
that K3MQH will not be on for the Jan. VHF contest due to repairs
still being underway after a major lighting strike. W3EKT will be
borrowing K3IXD's Titan Amp for the CQ 160m CW contest.
N3II, Dave, brought pictures of his bent over tower. Repairs planned
in the spring. Meanwhile he has the 6m beam on a 9-ft mast & is
working DX with it (e.g., GM and TF).
N3UN, Wayne, is mostly just listen-ing. He was in the RTTY Roundup.
He had a Y2K problem with the old PC used for logging.
W3ZZ, Gene, has retired. His station is degrading, on HF he has a
problem with the beam and with the 40m antenna, on VHF is 432mHz
signal is very weak. He will be on from home in the Jan. VHF contest.
Gene plans to be one of the A61AJ operators for the WPX phone.
N3ND, Dan, is relocating from PVRC-NC. Dan is purchasing a home on a
3 acre wooded lot in Finksburg, MD. He had the new PVRC badge, which
everyone admired.
N3YDT, Jim, satellite activity is surrently curtailed due to coax
problems. He gave up an update on the AO-40 satellite.
K8OQL, Jerry, will be doing CQ160 CW from home. He will be at W8ZA
for ARRL DX CW and SSB.
W8ZA, Bob, is getting ready for the ARRL DX contests. The station
work has been on tasks within the shack. He provided copies of the
2000 ARRL DX CW and Phone certificates to his operators (10th place,
multi-op, 2 xmtr for CW; and 1st place, multi-op, 2 xmtr for Phone).
N4MM, John, sign-in looked like N9MM do due table dents, but his
"friends" from PA (NE3H and K3WC) changed it to N9MM/4. He has been
ill so he hasn't done much operating lately. And, his FT1000mp died.
He plans the NAQP and then the ARRL board meeting in TX.
K3WC, Dusty, has an FT1000 Mark 5. His 71 foot, crank up tower is
still on the ground.
K3LP, Dave, new home on 25 acres is targeted for April occupancy.
Dave is building a 20 x 20 radio room with six operating positions,
each position will have 240v, 30a, and internet service. There are
two, 150 foot towers planned. He has 3000 feet of 7/8 hardline. Dave
will be operating from J6 in a contest in either February or March.
K3SX, Sid, will be the 902 and 1296 mHz op at K8GP in the Jan. VHF
contest. K8GP will be operating from FM18, Fairfax County, VA.
K3UG, Barry, has purchased a 25 foot boat; a new interest. K3IXD
suggested he activate water grids.
NE3H, Joe, was in RTTY Roundup. His 2 antenna stack match quit in the
contest. He reported that 40m on Saturday was very good.
K3MM, Ty, spent 9 hours in the RTTY contest. He also operated the
NAQP CW and said the conditions were not incredible but were good
across all the bands. He will be the K8GP 2m op in the VHF contest.
Ty's daughter attended too and got lots of attention.
N3KTV, Jim, put up his tribander on a "rocket launcher" for the ARRL
10m contest.
I did not record the scores because W2GG continues to do a excellent
job collecting and posting them to the PVRC reflector and on the
PacketCluster, and K3DI insures that the scores are in the
newsletter.
SHORT NOTES by Dick Wilder, K3DI
We could use somebody to be the PVRC Newsletter advertising manager.
We now have 1.25 pages of advertising but it cost 2.25 pages to
publish most issues. In the spring, I do get extra advertising for
the jumbo May issue by sending an email or sample copies to selected
advertisers in Ham publications and all who advertise in the NCJ. I
think one person pushing advertising could turn this rag into a club
profit!
Active members receive the monthly PVRC Newsletter and all members
(once a member, always a member) receive the jumbo May edition that
has the club roster and invitation to the June PVRC reunion-on-the-
air. An active member is one in our 175 mile radius contest area who
sends in club competition scores or any member who sends in a
donation to WR3L. Any member may receive the PVRC Newsletter via
email my sending a request to [email protected]. For now, email
subscribers will continue to receive the paper editions, if otherwise
qualified.
W2GG announced on our reflector that PVRC finished #1 unlimited in
the ARRL September VHF QSO Party. ND3F was rover #1, K8GP was multi
#2, W4RX SOHP #4, and K3DNE SOHO #6. Congratulations!
Ron, N4MO has had enough of the cold weather and heads south. He'll
work the ARRL CW and SSB from HR6 and CQWW WPX from TI7. Be sure to
work him & spot him often!
CT 9.57.001 did not support the Cabrillo format in the CQ160CW
contest (though '.003 does). CQ will accept such as the ALL and SUM
files if your software does not handle Cabrillo. The acknowledgement
from my sending the ALL and SUM files said that it would be fine to
send in a Cabrillo format as a second submittal. I read this as they
will take the old formats but really rather see Cabrillo.
The ARRL requires the Cabrillo format. For now, CQ accepts other
formats in some cases. I use CT so I'm all set. But, are there any
PVRC members that need software to convert their logs from another
contest program into Cabrillo? If there is sufficient interest, I
could write a program to convert club competition logs from any
contest program into the Cabrillo format. The SS contest has a
different Cabrillo format so it would be most easily written as a
stand alone program. Please reply to [email protected] or packet if you
need such a conversion program.
