I'm sad to report that Nap Perry W4DHZ (FOC 1296) died early this
morning - 13 Jan 2000 - of complications of metastatic prostate
cancer. He was an avid DXer and active member of the Virginia DX
Century Club and had worked over 360 countries in his long ham
career. He was active on the air as recently as this past fall.
Nap's wife, Sweet Pea, had predeceased him in 1997. Nap's son
asked that I pass this on to Nap's many FOC friends. de W4ZYT
THE PVRC PRESIDENT'S REPORT by Brian McGinness, N3OC
Well, spring is just around the corner and it's time to be planning
those summer improvements to your contest station!
During the next year, we hope to bring you speakers and newsletter
articles that will help both our newer and older members improve
their stations. Plans are in the works for a visit and
presentation from Force 12 antennas, a series of articles on
stacking from WX0B (Array Solutions) and an article on rotating
towers. We plan on video taping the presentations so the outlying
regions will have the opportunity to see them.
We are looking for members to volunteer to help in a couple areas.
First, we would like someone to take over editing our column for
Auto Call, allowing K3DI to concentrate exclusively on the
newsletter. As a member club of FAR (the Foundation for Amateur
Radio) we are allocated a small column each issue, and a larger
write-up once a year. This is an important recruiting tool, and
will probably be even more so with the upcoming licensing
restructuring.
The second area we need help in is with our internal awards
program. We need someone to make administer this program, which
would consist of getting certificates and pins made up for those
stations that met the score goals.
If anyone is interested in helping in these areas, please contact me.
This month the ARRL DX begins, and we would like to see each of the
regional coordinators help as many of their members as possible
find a place to operate from. With the improved sunspot numbers,
modest stations are able to ring up some pretty good scores, so
please team up with a friend and get on the air this spring! Go

WORLD RADIO TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
>From a AI6V msg. The Slovenian Contest Club is hosting the World
RadioSport Team Championship 2000. They have asked AI6V to head up
fund raising for non-Europe. Donations in excess of $250 may be
submitted via a directed contribution to the Northern California DX
Foundation, earmarked "WRTC 2000" and sent to Bruce Butler, W6OSP,
at 4220 Chardonnay Ct., Napa, CA 94558. Contributions under $250
should be marked "WRTC 2000" and sent to Carl Cook, AI6V/P49V, at
2191 Empire Ave., Brentwood, CA 94513. His e-mail is
[email protected]. For event information, go to the web at
hhtp://wrtc2000.bit.si. Thank you in advance for any help that you
can provide for this project.
>From K3MM. After much careful deliberation, the officers of PVRC
have selected Eric Scace, K3NA, as the PVRC Team Leader for
WRTC2000 in Slovenia! Eric has a long history of contesting and DX
accomplishments from around the world. With his penchant for
propagation analysis and his job which keeps him in that quadrant
of the world a good part of the time, he's uniquely qualified to
represent PVRC in this prestigious event! Congratulations Eric and
good luck OM!
Extracted from a K3NA message. Eric needed to pick a teammate and
received 33 recommendations from conversations via the CQ-Contest
reflector. In the end, he had a half a dozen really great
candidates... and was waffling between two: Dave K6LL (who got the
bronze medal in the 1996 WRTC) and Bob N6TV (who came in 12th in
1996 from a significantly poorer location). In the end he picked
N6TV, based on his broader operating experience outside the USA and
very strong CW skills.
CENTRAL MEETING MINUTES 1/10/00 by Brian McGinness, N3OC, Pres
The PVRC central meeting was held in Temple Hills, preceded by
dinner at Mamma Stella's Italian restaurant. (Note for future
meetings - no buffet at Mamma Stella's, so arrive in time!)
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by PVRC president Brian,
N3OC. Members and guests were introduced. Members attending were:
WR3L, N3NT, K3ZO, W3TOM, W3AZ, W3HVQ, N3UMA, KE3Q and N3OC.
N3OC gave the presidents report. There was a PVRC BOD meeting held
1/3/00 at the Nest in Olney, with all board members attending
(N3OC, K4VV, W2GG, WR3L, K3MM, KE3Q and N3RR). The purpose of the
meeting was to discuss new ideas for PVRC in 2000, and to get an
idea of the direction we should head. A lot of good ideas were
presented, and we are working towards implementing many of them.
Some of the ideas that we will be trying in 2000 are:
A big push for this year's ARRL DX contest. This contest is in
reach, if we just mobilize our members and get on the air. N3OC
will be contacting the regional chairmen about this.
Enhancing the PVRC award program. Now that the 5m award is up and
running, we would like to add several participation awards,
possibly with a certificate for a 500k or greater score, and a pin
for a 2m or greater score.
By-law changes. We plan on changing the bylaws slightly to allow
all members to vote on the club officers, not just the central
region.
Better meeting presentations. Plans are already in the works to
bring in some quality speakers and plan for some interesting
presentations at the meetings. We plan on video taping the best of
these to allow the outlying regions to view them at their meetings.
Revamping of the newsletter. We hope to enhance the newsletter
with more officer's reports, a technical article and an article
featuring one of our members each month. If you are interested in
providing material to the editor, please contact K3DI or N3OC.
And a couple ideas still in the formulative stage - on the air
meetings and conducting a contest university for new members.
WR3L provided a brief report on the status of the treasury, and
reminded everyone that a donation envelope is included in the
January newsletter.
N3NT reported the QSL cards were in, and several members received
their cards at the meeting. Contact Craig if you need to pick up
your cards.
A motion was made, seconded and approved to donate $100 to
WRTC-2000 via AI6V. K3NA is our representative from PVRC in
WRTC-2000.
The usual war stories were told to finish up the meeting. N3NT
went to J6 for CQWW, and learned how much work dxpeditions can be.
Craig will be on from home in the CQWW 160 at the end of the month.
WR3L is looking for ops for the ARRL DX contests. If you are
interested and willing to drive to the Baltimore area, please
contact Dave.
KE3Q was at A61AJ for CQWW CW again, and will be single-oping at
W3LPL (as W3AO?) for the CQWW 160 contest.
W3TOM has been travelling, but reports he is ready to revamp his
station, and is looking for help and also for operators once he is
done.
W3AZ is looking for ops to help in the 160 contest this month.
Bill advises his station is often available, and Bill would be
interested in sharing the operating chores with someone. Bill also
reports he is working on the design of an amplifier safety circuit
that would automatically shut down the amp if the load changed.
W3HVQ had a copy of the ARRL antenna compendium, which features his
antenna design, called "The Bumbershooter" on the front cover! He
also reports he has been busy with an old prop pitch motor that he
has been repairing.
N3UMA finally got tired of the city antenna constraints, and bought
a new QTH with 1.3 acres. He used to have attic antennas, now he
hopes to put up a tower this summer. In the meanwhile, he has used
his slingshot to put up a fan dipole for 10/15/20/40. The meeting
was adjourned at 9:30.
PVRC/NC MEETING MINUTES 1/6/00 by Pete Soper, KS4XG
The meeting was at Ryans Family Restaurant in Cary from
5:30-8:30pm.
Attendees: Guy K2AV, Brian K3KO, Bob K4HA, Jim K4QPL, Merri KF4OAD,
Stephanie KG4CXZ, Mark KI7WX, Brent KO4PY, Pete KS4XG, Bert N4CW,
Joe NA3T, Dan N3ND, Jay NT4D, Jeff NX9T, Will WJ9B
Membership: This was the second meeting of Stephanie Brookover,
KG4CXZ. Stephanie holds a technician plus license and is
enthusiastic about contesting using Dad's station (NT4D). She made
a single op effort in the 10 meter contest and appears to be
hooked! She can be reached at sjbrook@
mindspring.com. A unanimous vote for membership was recorded.
Welcome to PVRC, Stephanie!
This was the first meeting of Merri Crawford, KF4OAD. Merri holds
an advanced license and takes part in a wide range of contests
including rtty, cw, and phone with her 50 watt "stealth" apartment
station in Carrboro. She has also been single op from the W0UN
super station. Merri can be reached at [email protected] and
has a web page at http://www.qsl.net/kf4oad. Chapter membership is
now 34.
Club business and announcements: W0UCE sent regrets. The
presentation that NA3T was to give at the February meeting has been
rescheduled to March. It is "Analyzing VHF contest logs to look
for interesting propagation."
KS4XG is looking for volunteers to help prepare a booth at RARSfest
and compile an AV record of member stations. (K4HA, NT4D and N3QYE
are signed up: any more?).
KI7WX moved that all members join in celebration of N4CW making it
into his second millennium.
Member notes: K2AV remarked that TX stations made up 25% of his 10
meter contest log. Others said they noticed a disproportionate
number of Texas contacts too. Guy reported the main (but not sub)
receiver of his MP1000 has died and he's preparing to send it for
repairs. On a happier note Guy explained that since one of his
kids is moving to the Triangle area he stands to save $1k per year
on phone bills and will be claiming that for his hobby. The
consensus of the group is that he'll be lucky to see half.
KI7WX took part in the "multiple multi/single" 160 efforts with
K4HA and AA4NC. Mark has weighed many alternatives and decided on
a combination of wires and high band stacks on one tower for his
home station. Mark also exhorted the group to get on the air for
the phone Sprint contest, at least at the start on 40 meters,
explaining that without the "local" contacts its hard for ops in
this area to be competitive.
NX9T joined K4HA for the 10 meter contest. Jeff is really looking
forward to getting moved! K4HA will operate from VE9XC in the CQ
160 CW.
K3KO topped his previous year score in both the 10m and 160
contests and remarked that he had WAS after the first 10 hours of
the 10 meter test with his quad fixed NW.
N3ND took part in the 160 contest at W0UCE with N4CW. Dan, Jack
and Bert are holding first place M/S amongst PVRC members.
KO4PY has been focusing on QRP efforts with homebrew gear running
100 milliwatts. WJ9B has also made some QRP efforts. Will has
managed to take part in all the main contests going back to CQWW,
more participation than usual for him.
N4CW joined in the M/S 10m effort at the AA4NC station. Bert
described the long process of diagnosing a "bad audio" problem
stemming from his newly acquired SB200 that's destined for his
second station in Maine.
Apart from replacing the feet Bert systematically worked through
the amp's components until he found the cold solder joint that was
the fault. Bert said he also did WAS early in the 10 meter
contest. Bert reminded all of the CW NAQP and was promptly
volunteered to organize a team.
NA3T just got back from Sidney. Joe described the very avid use of
amateur television by Australian hams on a 576 MHz band there, with
well produced public service programs and excellent signal to noise
ratios. Alas, Joe found something very hard while repelling off a
rock face on the trip and returned to the states with a broken
hand.
KF4OAD described her amateur interests and participation in recent
contests and QSO parties. Merri has one of the stealthiest HF
antennas going, a 40m double bazooka made of coax that's painted to
blend into her apartment's soffet (it also looks like cable TV
wiring).
KS4XG continues to work on his new shack with the first pieces of
wall paneling in place (http://www.pagesz.net/~ks4xg). Pete has a
C4 coming for his tower and will be moving his quad to an AB577
mast.
K4QPL took down his temporary tower and reports that getting his
TS850 fixed (rig interface ruined by lightning) but at a cost of
$300. Jim commented that the recent KI7WX open house was a great
outing. Jim described his "balun loading" effort during the ARRL
160 test and heroic attempts to draw the attention of K4HA, N4AF
and others. Jim said that he and W0UCE are "really going to do it"
and plan to pour concrete for their tower projects "soon" but was
careful not to specify the year encompassed by "soon".
KG4CXZ described her 10m single op effort with enthusiasm.
Stephanie worked 30 states and 19 countries. She said that it was
a real power trip after she realized how effective Dad's station
is. Stephanie also caught Jay up on all his QSLing and several
members asked if she was available to help them out.
NT4D made personal best efforts in CQWW and Sweeps and reported a
lot of satisfaction with his current setup.
Next Meeting. The next meeting will be at Ryans Family Restaurant
at Cary Crossroads on Thursday February 3rd. Come at 5:30pm for
extra rag chewing or 6pm for the formal meeting.
SWVA PVRC JANUARY MEETING MINUTES by John Mitchell K4IQ
SWVA PVRC met on January 21 at the Western Sizzlin Restaurant at
Crossroads Mall, Roanoke. Attending were W4JAM, John; W0MAN,
Susanne; N4EL, Nat; K1GG, Gordon; K1SO, Jerry; KC9LC, Randy;
WA4BKW, Bill; and K4IQ, John. After dinner, we each discussed our
current station, planned changes, and recent activities. W4JAM has
gotten up 70 feet of 55G and awaits better weather to move the
tribander from the small house bracketed tower. He is looking for
an LK800 amplifier. W0MAN worked as ground crew on this project,
operating the winch to send the sections up. K1GG lost an element
off the KLM 3 ele. 40M beam in the high winds last week. He is
working with PVRC'er Mike C. to try to obtain insulators to replace
those broken. N4EL operated in the ARRL rtty roundup and had a
good time, S+P'ing enough to earn the certificate for QSOs. KC9LC
just returned from a Caribbean cruise and recommends the
experience; only brought an HT, though. He tried to get a tour of
the ship's radio room, but found they are not doing those anymore.
WA4BKW said we are all helping to support him now, as he reached SS
eligibility this year. K1SO had a great time operating a multi
from Okracroke Island off the NC coast. K4IQ shared details of the
folded unipole installation he is attempting on the 100 foot tower
for 160 M.
We then had a somewhat impassioned discussion about the FCC move to
restructure licensing. The consensus was that, although it was a
shame, we would probably have to live with it and make the most of
it. There will probably be both more contesters, and more QRM, but
the biggest thing was the loss of our tradition. Morse code is a
common language most hams shared, and now it appears that will go
by the wayside.
We also discussed what we could do to make our meetings more
interesting, and agreed we would appreciate receiving videos of any
interesting presentations given at the larger chapter meetings, as
well as potential visits from DC area, or other chapter members.
To make things more interesting, K1GG said we should have
competition among the chapters, employing a weighting scheme to
level the playing field, and recognize outstanding efforts by
chapters in a given contest.
We discussed the upcoming Dayton convention, and it looks like SWVA
will have a record number attending this year. We also floated the
idea of mounting a "serious" field day effort this year, and agreed
to discuss it further at our next meeting. We will meet on March
10, everyone's February calendar being full, and K4IQ agreed to try
to find a suitable location where we might view a video of interest
as part of the meeting agenda.
CENTRAL VIRGINIA MINUTES by WA4QDM
Our first meeting of the new millennium was held on January 10th
with a program entitled "A Celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary
of Bob Eshleman's Amateur Radio Career". The evening, which was
attended by 67 members and guests, began with an elegant buffet.
Bob's wife, Rosalie, N4CFL, MC'd an interactive POWERPOINT
documentary covering the four eras of W4QCW-W4DR's amateur career;
Harrisonburg 1950-57, east RIchmond 57-68, Chesterfield 68-77 and
Powhatan 1977-2000 and beyond. Bob's "ham twin" W4QDC was in
attendance as was his partner on the 1954 Navassa Dxpediton
(KC4AB), W4VZQ. Both of these guys as well as many others shared
stories following each segment of the history. A replica of the of
the KC4AB station was setup including some original pieces of gear
and an audio clip. This historic operation, by three teenagers,
was a new country for everyone and is probably the first and only
"new one" done by such young hams in the past century.
The normal meeting time is 7:30pm on the second Tuesday. Programs
are WK4Y on CAP in February and NR4M on WIN4DX in March.
LEO BOBERSCHMIDT, MM/W3LEO, IN SCOTLAND
Leo, W3LEO, will again be active from Portpatrick in southwest
Scotland from 29 February to 17 March, 2000. However, Leo states
that this is a vacation not a DXpedition and "time on the air will
depend on the antennas, on propagation, and on when the nearby pubs
are open, HI..." [There is a very nice pub only 22 steps from his
cottage]. He will use the callsign MM/W3LEO and plans to be in the
ARRL International DX SSB Contest. Outside of the contest, he will
concentrate on 10, 12, & 17 SSB. He will use an Icom 706 (100
watts]), an R-5 vertical [10, 12, 15, 17, 20 meters], and wire
antennas on a DK9SQ mast for 40 & perhaps 80.
QSL via his CBA (with SASE) or bureau.
NOTE: the CEPT callsign for someone visiting Scotland is your
callsign preceded by "MM/" [not "GM/"] -- and there is NO number
after the prefix. Last fall, Leo had some hams in the CQWW contest
tell him he HAD to have a number after the prefix; not true.
REPORT FROM THE ANNAPOLIS CREW OF PVRC by Dick Wilder, K3DI
Expressing an interest in the Crew are members W3UL, WA0QII, N3UMA,
W3ICM, N3WK, and K3DI and non-members W3OQ and K3NY. I have three
goals. (1) Encourge more Hams in the Anne Arundel and adjacent
counties to contest from their own station, (2) to build a 3-
station M/M that welcomes beginner contesters, and (3) to provide
an Anne Arundel Co meeting location. If interested, please contact
me (see editor info on the Reference Page) about attending a formal
Crew meeting at K3DI during the week before the ARRL CW test on the
18th.
SHORT NOTES FROM THE EDITOR, K3DI
I have activated mail forwarding via [email protected] while searching
for a good free ISP. Meanwhile, the ARRL address will get to me.
Howie, N4AF, lets us know you can get to the PVRC archives by
browsing: www.qth.net/archive/pvrc/pvrc.html
Masa Miura, AJ3M, was scheduled to visit the United Nations on
January 14th and 15th and said he would try to operate 4U1UN. I
didn't see any cluster spots.
In my opinion, the ARRL outgoing bureau is overpriced with the
result that I now send all my outgoing cards via the RSGB which is
a free service to its members. Of course, if one factored in the
membership cost it is not a bargain but that free service fell out
from my membership and subscription to the RSGB magazine, RadCom.
It is noted that type AO mail is the least expensive when sending
packets of cards overseas.
>From Ron Uthus, N4MO: We've arrived in Costa Rica and will be
active until March 19th as TI7/N4MO. I'll be up for both the ARRL
tests as per usual on 15 LP. Then for a quick trip to V31 for the
WPX test the end of March. Don't have the call but V31 won't be a
problem multiplier this year. At last count there will be at least
5 stations up and screaming during the WPX test.
