PVRC NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION SCHEDULE by Dick Wilder, K3DI
The May issue is the annual issue that will announce the June PVRC Reunion-on-the-air, contain reunion log sheets, and will contain the full club roster. It will be circulated to the usual 450 active members plus nearly 300 additional members who are inactive or moved out of area. Remember, "Once a member, always a member." Please send any updated roster updates to W2GG ASAP. Because of the wide circulation, the May issue is an ideal vehicle to announce all summer activities. Also, it is an excellent place for companies to advertise their Dayton specials. The deadlines are April 15th for the roster updates to W2GG and the 25th for news, minutes, and advertising copy to K3DI.
During the Summer, two pairs of months will be combined to become the issues of June/July and August/September. Pub and deadline dates TBA.

Called to order about 6:15. Introductions and note of first attendees W6NWS & K4WES. Both live in the general area. Larry has been in the area since 91. Welcome Larry and Wes. (Guess which one is Wes...)
Also Paul, K4JA down to visit from Tidewater chapter. Wife visiting the in-laws, and Paul visiting us. Sounds like a plan. Welcome any time, Paul.
N4CW has returned from the land of hinters. No, REALLY returned. HOWEVER, his amp failed to fix itself in his absence.
Larry, W6NWS brings tower, KT36XA, 2 el Forty, and rotatable 80 dipole to the wars. That will do nicely.
N4TL has been down to Florida, same time as the Miami Hamfest. Says attendance is down to 1/3 of size in times past.
Wes, K4WES, gave us the low down on where he lives, roughly where 15-501 goes over the Haw. He has LAND, and plans TOWERS. Was noted that he will have tons of advice, help, etc, to help him along. Mainly an SSB op. Made the mistake of asking whether WriteLog or whatever other logging program is better. Meeting temporarily suspended for the usual riot. Gonna hafta put that prohibition on the web page.
W2CS will be doing the 160 CW at N4AF.
With all the traffic out to Blount's Creek and back we need to start our own Raleigh-Blount's Creek airline. Gary can run it.
Just in case the FAA does NOT approve, the south-side 264 bypass around Wilson is well under construction. Just from a gander looks done this summer or fall. Will save 15-20 minutes on the drive to N4AF/NY4A by not having to go through Wilson. That should INCREASE the traffic out to N4AF.
What was that, "Build it and they will come?"
K4HA had a great time at the operation at Topsail. They "done good." Has a 4 el twenty on the ground at base of tower. Has several experiments going with this. Listening for subterranean 20m propagation from Bora Bora, whether the SW noise source is as loud with beam on the ground, and worm-thermy.
Also notes he has a sked sometimes with K4PB 7168 8:50 pm when it happens. Guys listen out for Alan. Was there a day with this?
K4MA headed for 8P9JA. Listen, spot, work, etc, etc. Anybody who can't come up with a doctor's excuse for not working him 6 bands gets flogged next meeting. Free dessert with the flogging tho. Also now manager of the SSB Sprint. (That's known as self-flogging, but good luck!)
WW4M out helping at AD4L. Making good progress over there. AD4L still traveling a lot. Also noted that 4 from chapter were over 250K in SS wars. Very cool.
AA4NC reporting a 6 meter pipeline opening to UT5 stations. ONLY. A LOT of questions about did they all sound alike, have identical chirps, etc. Final consensus was that it was Igor, brother Rani, sister Tanya, brother Boris, and his other brother Boris.
N2NFG has his tower to 30' and experiencing nosebleeds. But can now see into neighbor's yard. Has antennas, too. Thirty feet is better than on the ground. Difference carefully measured in preparation for inevitable peer review at chapter meeting.
K4CIA worked the P5. Now all the questions about did the P5 work him, ya, ya, ya...
KO7X reports that KI7WX will be heard on in some upcoming tests using a low dipole on 20 meters. Whatever happened to the crank-up on the flatbed truck?
K4QPL said something, but Carnac apparently blanked out at this point in the meeting.
(The waiter kept bring Carnac more tea, and he may have become water-logged at this point. Later was treated at Rex for Tea on the Brain. When regaining consciousness, and asked about K4QPL, wanted to know hadn't he changed his call to N4 something? So now we know that the QPL/PQL dyslexia is caused by excessive quantities of sweet tea. Jim has been dying to figure out how that happens.)
Shortly thereafter, meeting dissolved into miscellaneous BS and scientific pursuits. Next meeting Thursday 7 March at Ryan's. See y'all there.
RALEIGH HAMFEST, SUNDAY APRIL 14th by Jim Price, WW4M
In April, there will be an extra meeting at the Raleigh hamfest, Sunday, April 14th at the State Fairgrounds in west Raleigh. For more information see http://www.rars.org. There will be a gathering at 11am at the PVRC/NC table. This is an official meeting, so please sign in any time you stop by. We'll also have our 3rd annual RUFZ competition, measuring contestants' ability to copy randomly generated callsigns at high rates. SWVA CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES, March 2002 by Mike Barts, N4GU
The Southwest Virginia chapter of PVRC met at 6:00 PM, Friday, March 8, 2002 at the Roanoker Restaurant in Roanoke, VA. In attendance were W4YE and XYL, KG6AR, KC9LC, W0MAN, W4JAM, K4IQ, K1SO, N4JED and son, N4GU, and K2XX (visitor).
The dinner portion of the meal consisted of a lot of good food and wide ranging discussions of the hot contesting and DXing topics of the day.
This was the first meeting for Joe, K2XX who we hope to entice into joining PVRC. He is a long time Hokie alum who retired from NNJ to the bucolic peace of Floyd county and has built a station on a ridgetop for DXing.
There was a discussion of recent contest activity in ARRL DX SSB. W4JAM ran mostly 10 and 15m and noted that the rain dropped the noise level at his QTH. Also active in were W4YE, KG6AR, K1SO, and N4JED. There was a general consensus that Africa was MIA during the contest.
K4IQ used his new 160m vertical in the CQ 160m cw contest and reported great results, generating nice EU pileups.
The Virginia QSO Party is the next weekend and we hope to see activity from lots of chapter members. K1SO will be operating mobile handing out lots of rare counties.
It seems to be the general consensus that the Roanoker Restaurant is a good location for our meetings, offering good food and accommodating us for our meetings. As such, we intended to make the Roanoker our regular meeting place.
The next meeting will be at 6:00, April 19 at the Roanoker Restaurant in Roanoke.
CVCC MEETING, 3/12/2002 by John Youell, W4TNX
A pretty good crowd turned out at the "Crazy Greek", as we filled up our normal "alcove" area and overflowed to a couple of other tables in the main dining area. A few that joined us for the "before meeting dinner" had to leave for other activities. The following were in attendance during the evening: WU4G (Ronnie), NK4H (Bob), WK4Y (Roy), K4JA (Paul), W3BP (Bruce), W4HJ (AC), N9WMU (Jay), W4HZ (Jon), KS4RX (Becky), KC4AUF (Tony), K4KML (Marie), K4KJL (Jerry - dinner only), W4DR (Bob), KZ5OH (Jim & for dinner only, his XYL and harmonic YL), N4DWK (Dave), W4MYA (Bob), KF4QQY (Barry), N4DEN (Dennis) and W4TNX (John). I must have left a few names off the list, as I think I counted 20 people at the actual meeting.
After introductions, the club business included: * A packet cluster update from N4DEN (Dennis) and WU4G (Ronnie). Although we had a recent computer problem, all in all, the packet situation has been "golden" and we are in FB shape with local 2m coverage and internet. Thanks to all involved! * Numbers were assigned to the sign-in list and KC4AUF (Tony) sponsored a door prize of a logging program CD. K4KML (Marie) drew the winning number out of the "hat" and it was N9WMU (Jay). How about that Jay - make it to one meeting and you are a winner already! * W4DR (Bob) made presentations of the club awards for: * The most band countries in the past year * The greatest percentage increase in needed band countries
For the first time, we had a "double winner / clean sweep" by WK4Y (Roy). The idea behind the two awards is that newcomers have a great opportunity for the most total new band countries in a given year, while the old timers have a chance at the percentage increase in band countries. W4DR pointed out that Roy has some potentially tough competition coming up this year. We are sponsoring the Club Plaque in the memory of Bill Cox (W4DAA) and would really like to have some good club participation (we need at least 3 logs to be considered in contention for the club plaque!). W4MYA (Bob) is putting on an effort from his place and it looks like we have several folks interested, including some newcomers, which is a good thing! * W4MYA (Bob) and K4JA (Paul) mentioned their results in the recent SSB and CW contests, (but only after prodding by this author!). These stations are really putting up some huge points for the PVRC * The club voted to send gift certificates to the host of our 2 meter packet site (WA4ONG) and Mike Cochran (friend of N4DEN) who helped out immensely with the fiber cable installation at WA4ONG's site. * The club will reimburse W4HZ (Jon) for the out-of pocket cost for packet-related fiber cable. * Nominations for next year's officers are: President: W4DR (Bob) Secretary: N4ZJ (Tom) Treasurer: W4NM (AJ)
The program for the evening was the K5K DX'pedition. This was a relatively short video, but prolonged by the technical ineptness of too many technical types involved in finding the right combinations of channels on the TV and the VCR. Maybe we would have done better with a wireless connection between the VCR and the TV!

NORTHWEST MEETING NOTES by Ed Steeble, K3IXD, NW Chairman
The NW region met at Paradise Grill in Frederick, MD on 19 March 2002. In attendance were: K3IXD, W3ZZ, W8ZA, K8OQL, N4MM, K3SKE, K3MM, KT4W, N3VOP, AA3XZ, W2YE, NE3H, K3WC, and W3EKT.
For the business part of the meeting:
1) From ARRL, N4MM reported the policy regarding eQSL cards is on the ARRL web page. He reminded everyone that Honor Roll submission are due by the end of March. 2) From CQ W3ZZ reported that the CQ VHF Magazine will be returning as a quarterly publication. This month, as we went "'round the table", everyone was asked to describe their station.
I didn't record the contest scores nor who operated where, that information is available from W2GG excellent postings.
K3SKE talked about the new WWV format.
K3MM will be in the high power category at PJ2 for the CQWW RTTY contest this year.
K3WC made RTTY Honor Roll.
Then after going 'round, W3ZZ said the NW region members present have good stations, the potential is there for big(ger) scores. The scores could be increased by getting on at the right times (e.g. 1 hour before sunrise on 20m, then moving to 15m at sunrise, and 2 hours later moving to 10m. At the sun spot minimum this strategy will change but for now it is valid. Another way to increase the score is to make use of Packet Cluster. And if using Packet Cluster, remember to spot PVRC members too. Those spots are pick up by nodes worldwide.
There were some philosophical points made about whether the objective was to be the best in the chosen class or to get the most points for the club?
We also talked about when to call CQ and when to S&P. There were no specific answers provided.
If you can't operate the full contest, consider inviting others over and operating a multi. Or consider going to one of the other PVRC multi that are looking for additional operators.
And everyone was reminded to send in their score, they all count for Potomac Valley Radio Club.
The discussions concluded with what advise about improving the station do you give a person with a 100w transceiver and a dipole? Some believe, buy a used 1KW amp but others pointed out that the 10db gain only helps on transmit. Others believe a tribander would be better, that is about 4.5 db improvement on both receive and transmit. Then the point was made that the amp covers more bands than the tribander, but with the current sun spot conditions, couldn't the amp wait another year or two?

The Over-The-Hill Division of the Potomac Valley Radio Club met for lunch and discussion at MainStreetUSA in Annandale, VA at noon on 20 March 2002. The following were present: W4RX Jim Ahlgren, W3AZ Bill Leavitt, W4JVN Dave Klimaj, K6ETM George Sinclair, KM4YY Lee Mairs, K3ZO Fred Laun, K7CMZ Mel Woods, W3GN Lawrence Fadner, W6AXX Howard Leake, and AA4XU Ben Shaver.

NORTH CENTRAL GROUP (CARROLL COUNTY) MEETING MINUTES, 22 MARCH 2002 by Steve Beckman, N3SB
The North Central Group met Friday evening, March 22, at Stables in Westminster for dinner. In attendance were Fred K1EFI, Jean N1HMG, Steve NY3A, John AK3Z, Jim WX3B, Mike N3VOP, John W3JJH, William KB3GHE, Bryan AA3XZ, and Steve N3SB.
Plans were made for the CQWW WPX Phone contest. While almost half our group prefers CW contesting, a good turn-out is anticipated for this one anyway. Jim WX3B has been adding more operating positions to his mini multi-multi, so there will be plenty of seats available.
Fred K1EFI and Jean N1HMG taught us all a bit about the incoming QSL bureau process. They sort and distribute all "1E" cards. It sounded like a considerable time investment is made every month by both of them to get this job done. Their short message -- keep your local bureau supplied with postage and envelopes!
John W3JJH and William KB3GHE have been having good luck on 160 meters. Even with a low, shortened dipole, they are working stations easily.
John AK3Z, Steve NY3A, Jim WX3B and Steve N3SB are making plans to go to Dayton this year. The stations always can use an accessory or two, and its great to have an eyeball QSO with the folks we've gotten to know by hearing them on the bands.
Mike N3VOP has plans to upgrade his license. He's been actively contesting on VHF, but is starting to desire those HF privileges.
Other discussions overheard during dinner included the latest new equipment announcements -- Ten Tec's Orion and Yaesu's MK-V Field. Several tower parties are being planned for the area now that the weather is getting better.

Over the years, we've been having a PVRC breakfast every Wednesday morning at 0730 ET at Basel's Deli on Elkridge Landing Road in Linthicum, MD. Anyone wishing to attend can contact me at 410-765-1901 (Days) or Rusty Schaefer, N3WKE at 410-993-9462 for directions. We usually get from 6 to 10 attending each Wednesday.
Usual attendees are KA3EJJ, W3IKE, W3PJ, K2YWE, N3WKE, WA0QII, W3CB, K3VQ, W6AXX, and ND3F. Hot topics are VHF contesting, classic stations (Several of us are recreating our original stations), and WSJT mode.
SHORT NOTES from the editor
The FCC has redesigned and launched its Amateur Radio Service Web site in late February and changed the URL: http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/amateur/ It's now much easier to find our info.
Also in February, the ARRL Contest Branch has opened a new on-line Contest Soapbox page for contests at: http://www.arrl.org/contests/soapbox
We heard from Dave Bushong, KZ1O (ex-WB4ODN) who now lives Hudson, New Hampshire. He did well in the CQDX contest and many probably worked him in the CQ160SSB contest.
Pete de Volpi, KC3TL, is sorry for those waiting for their K1M QSL card. The cards did not arrive from the printer in Bulgaria and he has had to have them printed locally.
Lee Wical, KH6BZF, notes that the WWV and WWVH format changed on radio day, March 12th.
Roger Kaul, K3TM, of Olney, MD is moving. He is selling his four bedroom colonial on a 1/2 acre lot that has underground utilities and with a permit to allow one 68-foot tower. He's at 301-774-6848.
Note that the Worked All Europe DX Contest (WAEDC) held the second weekend of August (CW) and September (SSB) has been added to the PVRC 5 Million awards.
CLUB COMPETITION IN GACW DX CONTEST 2002 by Scott Parker, K7LU
Here is a unique opportunity for all PVRCers, especially those who currently reside far outside the boundaries for club competition in the major contests. GACW (the Argentine CW Group) is sponsoring a DX contest that includes club competition. The unique feature of this club competition is that there are no geographical boundaries. PVRCers worldwide can contribute to the club score. This is a new contest, to be held on the third weekend of April each year. That puts this year's event on the weekend of April 20/21 starting at noon UTC Saturday and running 24 hours. The exchange is RST+CqZone.
